The Ortolani di Bordonaro Castle: Where History Meets Nature

The Ortolani di Bordonaro Castle, located in the Settefrati district of Cefalù, is a captivating example of 16th-century Sicilian noble architecture. Surrounded by centuries-old olive groves and just a short walk from Mazzaforno Beach, the castle is a significant historical and cultural landmark in the region.

Its construction was commissioned by Antonino La Duca, a canon of the Cathedral of Palermo and archpriest of Caccamo. A commemorative effigy still preserved inside the castle bears witness to his legacy. Upon his death, the property passed on to his descendants—first the Signorino family, then the Ortolani family. In 1992, following the death of Baron Gabriele Ortolani di Bordonaro, the castle was donated to the Municipality of Cefalù with a clear wish: that it would become a center dedicated to culture, history, and thought, hosting exhibitions, religious events, literary gatherings, and philosophical discussions.

In recent years, the castle has hosted a variety of cultural events—moonlight performances, book presentations, concerts, and theatrical shows, often free of charge. Visitors can also explore its interior to admire its architectural beauty. The rooms are decorated with frescoes from different periods, including a cycle dedicated to Garibaldi’s exploits and another with oriental motifs. The castle also features a private wooden loggia connected to the Church of Santa Felicita, which allowed the owners to attend mass discreetly.

Recognized as one of the FAI (Fondo per l’Ambiente Italiano) “Luoghi del Cuore” (Places of the Heart), the castle is a powerful testament to the deep bond between cultural heritage and the Sicilian landscape.

If you’re visiting Cefalù, don’t miss this enchanting journey through time—among ancient walls, hidden frescoes, and breathtaking views of the sea. You can reach the castle on foot or by car by following signs to Contrada Settefrati, or by public transport from the station or stops such as San Francesco. While the castle does not have regular opening hours for tourists, it is open during cultural events and exhibitions organized by the Municipality of Cefalù.
